Minnesota (5-2) vs. Illinois (2-5) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 29
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Memorial Stadium, Champaign, IL
It’s not going to be easy, and the team hasn’t shown any signs that it can actually pull it off, but Minnesota is still in the Big Ten West race. But to even start to think about what’s possible, it has to win the first step in a run of three road games in four weeks against the Fighting Illini.
The Golden Gophers still have to play Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Northwestern, but first, they have to get past the way-too-close call against Rutgers, surviving in the final moments in a 34-32 win.
They’re just good enough with the running game and defensively to hang around with just about anyone, and the two losses came in an overtime collapse to Penn State and a 14-7 battle with Iowa, but at some point, they need to show a little consistency. Blowing away the Illini would be a nice step.
Illinois at least scored against Michigan, but the 41-8 blowout loss showed once again just how far the program has to go to merely be competitive.
The defense has done an okay job, considering it’s not getting any help from the offense, but it’s going to have to do far, far more now with a rough quarterback situation to get past.
With starter Wes Lunt hurting, and backup Chayce Crouch out with a shoulder injury, Jeff George Jr. completed just 4-of-14 passes for 95 yards with a score and an interception during his time against Michigan.
The Golden Gophers will rally back from the Rutgers game to come up with a terrific game from the defense, especially against the run. Illinois will give up close to 300 rushing yards as Minnesota runs and runs and runs some more. Don’t expect anything flashy – Goldy will go ultra-conservative.
