Why Michigan State Will Win
It’s all still there for the taking.
Even after the disastrous loss to Wisconsin, the Spartans can still get back to the College Football Playoff by winning out, and it obviously starts here with the Big Ten road opener.
As bad as last week was, the defense did a solid job overall against the Badger offense – the Spartans lost because of a few un-Spartanlike miscues. Against the Hoosiers, MSU’s run defense should be rip through the IU backfield and keep Devine Redding and company under wraps. Redding is a terrific back, but so far this hasn’t been the Hoosier running game of the last few years – it’s not going to start working this week.
The lack of a killer running attack has been killing the Hoosiers on third downs with too many long chances and too much work to do. It’s showing for an offense that has pop and explosion – even with an injured Simmie Cobbs hurting in the receiving corps – but can’t seem to move the chains, and is having a hard time capitalizing on decent drives.
Michigan State’s defense should be able to make up for any problems this week, even though it couldn’t always do it last week.
Why Indiana Will Win
It’s not like the Spartan offense is exploding.
It sputtered against Furman, and it struggled against Wisconsin, but it got the job done for a burst against Notre Dame – IU has to hold up just enough to keep the Spartan attack from getting into a groove.
The Hoosiers haven’t faced anyone with a big-time attack so far, but don’t blow this off – IU’s defense hasn’t always been able to slow down even the most mediocre of offenses over the years.
The defensive front isn’t dominating behind the line, but it’s been holding up well against the run allowing under 3.7 yards per carry in each game so far. It’s a different story this week against a power ground attack that’ll be far, far tougher and far, far better than anything IU has seen so far, but it’s an improved enough line to keep from getting gashed for a full four quarters.
The defense, though, can only do so much.
Last week against Wake Forest, IU QB Richard Lagow threw five picks, but the team was able to stay in the game by getting a few defensive stops and with a blast of a passing attack. Can Lagow throw for 496 yards against MSU like he did against the Demon Deacons? Now, but he’ll keep pressing.
What’s Going To Happen?
Michigan State will get its groove back, but it’s going to be a dogfight throughout.
Indiana at home isn’t going to go away. Lagow will keep his foot on the gas and should force the MSU offense to keep pushing and keep trying, but the Spartan defense will come up with just enough stops to stall drives, while the running game will take over in the second half.
