In a bazillion years you would’ve never guessed that on November 5th, your 2016 Michigan State Spartans would still be searching for their first Big Ten win.

They’ve been lousy, they haven’t been able to stop the run, they haven’t been able to come up with a big break over a puzzling and stunning six game losing streak. However, with Illinois this week and Rutgers up next, the chance is there to turn this back around in a hurry before Ohio State comes to East Lansing.

Can the running game finally take over? It looked great on the first drive against Michigan, but the line isn’t generating enough of a push and the quarterbacks are getting popped.

Is there a real, live quarterback option left?

Brian Lewerke was knocked out for the year with a leg injury, and Damion Terry was dinged up against the Wolverines, too, but should be available. Tyler O’Connor started the season and has three, three-touchdown days, but the offense still can’t find a spark.

Fortunately, for the Spartans, Illinois isn’t playing well, either. At least the Fighting Illini have a win, though.

The passing game is loaded with injures to the receiving corps, and with QB Wes Lunt iffy, at best – and that’s one of the few aspects that’s been working okay.

Illinois won’t be able to move the ball. Michigan State might have a turnover margin problem, but the beleaguered defense should be able to shut down an Illini offense that can’t keep the chains moving. Dead last in the nation in generating first downs, Illinois will still have problems against a Spartan team desperate for something positive.

It’ll finally get it, but it’ll be an ugly grind to get there.
