Why Michigan Will Win
The Rutgers passing game has been a complete and utter disaster.
It somehow did a decent job against Iowa, but it connected on fewer than half of its passes in three of the last four games including a just-as-bad-as-the-stats 3-of-16, 33-yard day against Ohio State.
So, to put it nicely, it’s not a plus that Rutgers has to try to throw the ball against the nation’s second-best pass defense.
Sometimes the numbers lie. Sometimes a team shows it’s giving up 135 passing yards per game, and it’s because it has wins over Army and Georgia Tech factored in, or it’s because the run defense is getting housed. But Colorado’s passing game is factored in, and Penn State, UCF and Wisconsin at least have had their moments.
The secondary has been a killer, the defensive front has been dominant, and the defense as a whole has been every bit as good as the hype.
Rutgers will have to pull teeth to try cranking up enough decent scoring drives to stay alive.
Why Rutgers Will Win
Finally, Rutgers has to leave the comforts of Ann Arbor.
The team is good no matter where it plays, but it’s the sixth game of the season and it’s the first road date of the season.
Meanwhile, Rutgers won both of its home games and pushed Iowa in a 14-7 loss. Yeah, it’s been better at home, and yeah, it got roasted on the road, partly because it played at Washington and Ohio State.
The linebacking corps might be banged up on an awful run defense, but the secondary has been okay. Overall, the D has been doing a lot of bending, but not breaking – at least when it’s not going against Washington and Ohio State.
There is a running game, at times. The defense isn’t awful when it’s getting a little help from the offense, and there’s a chance this could be a letdown moment for the Wolverines coming off the Wisconsin win.
It’s going to take something amazing, and it’ll take a lot of missed kicks – the Michigan placekicking and punting games have been miserable – but this isn’t quite as bad a team as it looked in Columbus.
What’s Going To Happen?
Outside of the kicking game, Michigan has been too tight and too good in all phases.
The Wolverines won’t get too quirky. Run the ball, keep running it, rely on the defense to clamp down and force Rutgers to throw, get out with an easy win.
