The next two games might decide the future of NC State football. If that sounds like hyperbole, at the very least, head coach Dave Doeren’s life next year won’t be fun if he finishes the year 5-7 and the team misses out on a bowl game.
The Wolfpack have strangely hit the skids, not looking the same since the loss to Clemson in mid-October. Oh sure, the win over Syracuse last week helped, but that might be a mirage considering the offense is about to deal with a killer Hurricane defensive front that just destroyed Virginia.
Miami found its pass rush again with five sacks and nine tackles for loss against the Cavaliers, while Mark Walton tore it up with his second 100-yard game in a row behind a line that’s looking okay as the season is winding down.
But State has a defensive front, too, destroying decent running teams all year allowing under 100 yards per game on the ground. If the Pack can get to Brad Kaaya – who had a rough day against the Cavaliers – all of a sudden, at home, they’ll have an honest shot of pulling this off.
The Pack have to score early, control the clock, and use the Miami aggressiveness as a positive with plenty of short-to-midrange passes to keep the chains moving. That’s easier said than done – everyone’s trying that – but QB Ryan Finley can do it.
The picks are starting to come after a brilliant start, but he’s hit on three straight 300-yard games while bombing away on Syracuse last week.
Finley will be great, the State D will rise up, and everyone will breath a bowl-bound sigh of relief with the team’s strongest win of the year.
