Why Miami Will Win

So how did Syracuse do it? How did they look so great in the shocking win over Virginia Tech? The offense cranked it up a few notches.

Virginia Tech’s dangerous defense always gets behind the line and is terrific at getting to the quarterback, but Orange QB Eric Dungey managed to get past the pressure to keep the passing game going all game long – and he ran well, too.

The offense might have had problems over the last two weeks against FSU and UNC, but there’s enough balance and enough options to finally get out of the doldrums and start pushing the ball deep again. If Syracuse can throw against the Hokie secondary, the Canes should, too – they’ve got the receiving corps to do it.

But to win, Miami’s defense has to keep getting into the backfield and it has to stop Jerod Evans.

The Canes might have lost the last two weeks, but the line made its share of plays behind the line, coming from all angle and generating enough negative plays to stall drives. The D did its part, but …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Really, can the Miami offense get going again? QB Brad Kaaya has been okay over the last two games, not terrific. His accuracy has been off, and outside of two big touchdown throws against FSU, he hasn’t looked comfortable. And why? He was getting popped.

Miami has only allowed seven sacks all year, but Florida State got three of them and North Carolina two. Throw in all the pressures, and the Cane offense never settled in and never got comfortable. Virginia Tech’s pass rush is just okay, but this group knows how to get behind the line with 20 different players registering a tackle for loss.

But for the Hokies, the key will be another big game from Jerod Evans. The junior QB has hit more than 60% of his passes in every game except for the rain-soaked win over North Carolina, and he did his part last week in a losing effort throwing for 307 yards and two scores while rushing for 61 yards.

He’s big enough to handle himself well against the rush, and he’s got the moxie and toughness to make the big throws against an aggressive Cane D. Ultra-efficient so far, the Hokie passing game can’t come up with a slew of big mistakes.

What’s Going To Happen?

In a battle of terrific defenses, and teams coming off disappointing losses, Virginia Tech will come up big at home.

Miami has been painfully close over the last two weeks to coming up with wins, but late mistakes have been costly. The Hokies will force those mistakes early, too.
