Miami (4-1) vs. North Carolina (4-2) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 15
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Hard Rock Stadium, Miam Gardens, FL
Why North Carolina Will Win
Don’t get into a twist over the horrible 34-3 performance against Virginia Tech.
The Hokies might be really that good, and this isn’t a Tar Heel team built for horrible weather conditions. If you want to call it a finesse team, okay, but when the conditions are okay, this offense can light up anyone.
That win over Florida State wasn’t a fluke in any way.
The Tar Heels need to keep QB Mitch Trubisky in one piece and upright, and Miami has a way of rattling every quarterback’s cage, but Deondre Francois kept on pressing last week and FSU was able to get the passing game moving without a problem at times. Trubisky can get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, and he’ll keep on pressing without making a slew of mistakes. He’ll be able to handle the pressure.
So far, UNC has only allowed 12 sacks – it’ll do a decent enough job protecting its quarterback, while it has to do what it can do hit Miami’s.
Can QB Brad Kaaya is trying to get past a shoulder injury that he’ll play through, but could be a problem with his No. 1 guy – Stacy Coley – questionable with a knee injury.
Miami got banged up and beaten by Florida State. Even if North Carolina is a finesse team, it’ll still bring the pop in the big game.
Why Miami Will Win
North Carolina might be way too one-dimensional. Even in the loss, the Miami defense showed what it could do by getting to the quarterback and blasting away. This is a real deal defensive front, even if it’s banged up, and it’ll tee off on Trubisky.
Star Tar Heel running back Elijah Hood got hurt against Virginia Tech and might be a question mark against the Canes. Considering how good Dalvin Cook was against the Miami D, and considering what a steadying force he became in the game, North Carolina will need another option if Trubisky doesn’t have his A game.
This game needs to be about Miami getting physical and go on long, marching drives. Everyone gets fat on the UNC defensive front, and Mark Walton is way overdue to crank up the rushing production rushing for just 44 yards against Georgia Tech and 39 against the Noles. He ran for 116 yards or more in each of the first three games, and this week it’s time to get it all going.
What’s Going To Happen?
North Carolina is a lot better than you think.
Miami has the talent, but that was a crushing loss to Florida State in a whole slew of ways, especially in terms of the toll it appears to have taken physically. The Cane ground game will crank it up on the bad UNC defensive front, but Trubisky will out play Kaaya and pull this off to stay in the Coastal chase.
