Miami (3-0) vs. Georgia Tech (3-1) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, GA
Why Miami Will Win
Two weeks. Miami has had two weeks to rest up and prepare for the option attack.
This couldn’t have worked out better for the Hurricanes with three light and fluffy warm-up games to get all the young parts in place, and then with a bye week they got a chance to catch a little bit of a break, step back, and get geared up to pull a Clemson and be disciplined against the Georgia Tech attack.
Boston College was able to do it, and Clemson last week suffocated the Yellow Jacket O by getting into the backfield early and snuffing out the ground game before it could get moving.
Miami might not have a lot of veteran talent across the defensive board, and it’s still going to need a while to get everything in place, but the D makes up for it with lots and lots of speed and fire, coming up with a ridiculous 40 tackles for loss in three games.
Miami will take up space in the Georgia Tech backfield all game long.
Why Georgia Tech Will Win
Miami hasn’t played anyone yet, and that includes Appalachian State.
Yeah, it’s easy to look amazing against bad teams, and that’s exactly what the Canes have been able to do. This is still a young group of linebackers with three freshmen starting and five underclassmen in the front seven. Two weeks might not be enough to be ready to handle the speed and precision of what the Yellow Jackets will bring.
Deshaun Watson might have had a nice game, but the Yellow Jacket secondary has been okay so far, while the aggressive defense has been good – maybe not Miami good, but good – at getting behind the line, too. For the first time all season long, the Canes will have to fight a little bit and will have to deal with a wee bit of adversity. This isn’t going to be easy, and the young team has to be ready for it.
And no, the Georgia Tech option attack won’t be that mediocre for a second week in a row at home. Get ready for more power, Miami – the Yellow Jackets will bring more thump than they did against Clemson.
What’s Going To Happen?
Miami will prove it’s for real. It’ll have its problems solving the Georgia Tech puzzle, but the balance on offense and a nice day from QB Brad Kaaya – he’ll be ultra-efficient – will be enough to overcome the problems the D will have throughout the game.
Justin Thomas will be good for Georgia Tech, but Miami’s defense will be better in the fourth quarter.
