Memphis (4-1) vs. Tulane (3-2) Game Preview
Date: Friday, Oct. 14
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Yulman Stadium, New Orleans, LA
Tulane gets to play again after last week’s game against UCF was postponed to November 5th thanks to Hurricane Matthew, and that matters.
Willie Fritz is doing a nice job in his first year with the Green Wave, getting his brand of offense rolling with three wins in the last four games and a good showing in losses to Wake Forest and Navy. And it matters because it adds another road game into the mix late meaning three of the next four and four of the final six games are away from New Orleans.
But Memphis has been pretty good, too.
New head man Mike Norvell has kept the offense rolling with a strong passing game and an air-tight attack overall. The Tigers don’t make a whole slew of mistakes, while the defense has been brilliant against everyone except Ole Miss – and Temple for a stretch last week.
To beat Tulane, the defense needs active, veteran linebackers who can handle the option version of the spread, and the Tiger 3-4 should be just strong enough and just smart enough – with an extra day to prepare and with five upperclassmen starting in the front seven – to hold down the Tulane O that’ll be effective, but not explosive enough.
Both teams are good enough to keep this close, but Tulane will need a passing game to step up to pull this off, and it won’t show up against a secondary strong at taking the ball away.
