Michigan (8-0) vs. Maryland (5-3) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 5
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, MI
How good are things for Michigan? It won on the road in a rivalry game against Michigan State by nine, and was never in any real danger after the first quarter, and it was considered by some to be underwhelming.
The Wolverines are steamrolling towards the massive date against Ohio State at the end of the regular season, but there’s an outside shot that might not matter if the Buckeyes are upset at some point before the final showdown.
Maryland might be thinking about that next week when Ohio State comes to College Station, but first, it has to deal with a nightmare of a Michigan defense.
No one knows the Jim Harbaugh Wolverines like Terp head coach D.J. Durkin – the former Michigan defensive coordinator – but in his return to Ann Arbor he has to deal with a ferocious D he helped put together. Good luck with that.
The Wolverines are No. 1 in the nation in total defense, scoring defense, and pass defense, and that’s after giving up 23 to the Spartans last week.
Maryland’s passing game isn’t going anywhere, and the running game that’s been so good now has to come up with something positive against the swarming Wolverine defensive front coming off an off day against Michigan State, allowing 217 yards and a rushing touchdown for the third time all year.
Consider last week an aberration.
Michigan State, for one of the few times all year, was able to power away a little bit, but Maryland isn’t going to be able to do that. However, the Terps are dangerous on the ground.
Ty Johnson is coming off of two 100-yard games – averaging over ten yards per pop in the last two weeks – while Lorenzo Harrison added 178 yards. These two have to get off early and somehow have get past the Wolverine defensive front and use their speed to make up for the lack of a Terp passing game. That’s not going to work.
Michigan will stop the run, get the run going, and control the game throughout as it keeps the dream season going – and makes the College Football Playoff committee think about putting the Wolverines into the No. 2 spot.
