LSU (5-3) vs. Arkansas (6-3) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 12
Game Time: 7:00 pm
Venue: Razorback Stadium, Fayetteville, AR
It’s the battle of College Football Playoff disrespected teams.
LSU battled Alabama really, really, really hard in a 10-0 war, to go along with the razor-thin losses to Wisconsin and Auburn, but somehow, this is only the 24th-best team in college football.
Yeah, Arkansas got waxed by Auburn 56-3 a few weeks ago, but it came back to dominate Florida 31-10 to become bowl eligible. The Hogs not only lost to a now-No. 9 Auburn, but they also lost to Texas A&M and Alabama – nothing really wrong there.
And they’re 25th in the latest CFP rankings.
It doesn’t really matter too much outside of appearances, but still, these are probably two of the 15 best teams in the country, even if they each have three high-profile losses.
The Arkansas defense came up with a big early pick-six to set the tone against the Gators, and then everything else kept on rolling, allowing a 49-yard Florida field goal. That’s it – the other Florida score came on an interception return for a score of its own.
This might’ve been the team’s best performance of the year, but now it’s got to come up with something else special against an LSU team that might just be the second-most talented in the SEC. Can it gear it back up after getting beaten up?
The Tigers couldn’t handle the Alabama defensive line all game long last week, and now they have to try to heal their wounds in a hurry and try fighting on to get bowl eligible.
After all the positives, and all the close calls, LSU still needs a win to get to six wins, with Florida and a trip to Texas A&M still to go. To do that, it needs to get Leonard Fournette going again, and it needs to somehow protect QB Danny Etling better than it did against Bama.
With no room or time to breathe, Etling completed just 11-of-24 passes for 92 yards and a pick, while Fournette was held to just 35 yards on 17 carries.
This week, the LSU O line will have a much easier time against an Arkansas defensive front that finally came up with a decent day from the pass rush against Florida, but isn’t going to bother Etling anywhere near as much as the Crimson Tide did.
It might be the last Arkansas home game of the year, but LSU will come back from last week’s fight to be on the right side of a slugfest.
