If it’s possible to be disappointing but still in okay shape, that’s these two.
LSU might be missing Leonard Fournette – who’s still trying to get past an ankle problem – but the rest of the team should be relatively fresh after not playing Florida last week thanks to Hurricane Matthew.
It’s the second game under head coach Ed Orgeron, and he needs this as a tune-up with Ole Miss, Alabama, and road games against Arkansas and Texas A&M to come. As rough as the first part of the season was, win out, and it’s in the SEC championship.
Meanwhile, Southern Miss has been stunningly strange. It was good enough to roll past Kentucky in the opener, but the offense inexplicably couldn’t keep up with Troy, and the defense couldn’t stop UTSA in a horrendous 55-32 loss last week.
The Golden Eagles should roll over the back half of their schedule, and the defense is better than it looked last week, they could use a huge performance and a national-attention win. That means Nick Mullens and the high-powered offense has to throw and throw and throw.
Expected to be okay despite a thumb injury, he’s thrown for 961 yards and seven touchdowns over the last two weeks, and he’s going to have to be brilliant for USM to have any shot.
UTSA ran wild on the USM defensive front last week, while Mullens now has to deal with an LSU secondary that clamped down two weeks ago on Drew Lock and the Missouri passing attack.
Expect a second straight attitude performance from LSU, especially considering the unexpected extra week off.
