Could this be the moment when the narrative is changed back around?
Before Houston woke up and realized it’s an American Athletic Conference program, it ripped apart Oklahoma and dominated over the first five games of the season, looking like a sure-thing for a New Year’s Six bowl slot, at the very least, with the College Football Playoff a possibility.
And then came the rough loss to Navy and the puzzling whiff against SMU, and that was it for the Cougar season.
But one win over Louisville would make this interesting.
The NY6 is still all but gone since Houston likely won’t even win its own division, much less its league, but a victory knocks out Louisville from the CFP discussion, makes Tom Herman a hot head coach again, and if it all works out right, puts Greg Ward Jr. back in the Heisman race.
There’s no path for the Louisville to get to the CFP unless Clemson tanks against Wake Forest, but it’ll at least be a discussion by going 11-1 and doing so impressively. The problem is that the Cardinals have beaten almost no one – the win over Wake Forest last week was just the second victory against a team that’s certain to go bowling.
Oh sure, the 44-12 final score was impressive, but it took a fight to get there.
There was way too much of a struggle to get past Virginia and Duke, but it’s still been impressive at times to show the spark and excitement needed to keep American interested.
But this isn’t a College Football Playoff-worthy team – at least it’s not until it shows something more against a solid team like Houston.
Get ready for the Cougars to come up with something special.
This is the rise-to-the-occasion moment for a Houston program that seems to have a knack for doing that under Herman. Oh sure, throw a 2015 UConn at them and they wilt, but a game like this on a national stage at home – we’ve all learned what happens with the spotlight on.
Greg Ward Jr. has been just okay after his tremendous start, but he hasn’t quite been right all year, and now he’s fighting through a shoulder problem. But he’ll be helped out by his run defense.
The Cougars gave up 306 yards to the Navy option attack that had the right groove on the right day, but that’s been about it.
They’ve allowed over 100 yards on the ground just twice – the two losses to Navy and SMU – and now this will be when everyone remembers just how good and how swarming the Cougar defensive front really is as it stuffs Lamar Jackson and makes him look human.
For about 50 minutes.
Houston will make this a fight, but the Louisville D will do its part against Ward to keep this withing range, and then the 2016 Heisman winner will come through with two late scoring drives to pull the Cardinals out of the fire in a fun, thrilling game that’ll quickly take over the trending top spot.
