Why Duke Will Win

Always known for its offense under David Cutcliffe, it’s the defense that’s getting the job done this year for the Blue Devils. The conditions had a lot to do with it, but the front seven slowed down the Army option attack last week while doing a great job all season against the run.

Can the linebackers be just as disciplined and solid against Lamar Jackson when he’s trying to break free?

So far the D’s been brilliant on third downs, great at forcing teams to press a bit, and it’s kept the team in games when the O hasn’t been putting up the numbers everyone is accustomed to seeing.

How’s it happening? The Blue Devils are getting behind the line on a regular basis, and that might be the only way to handle what the Cardinals do – attack, attack, attack. They’ve got to get to Jackson before he has room to roam free.

Why Louisville Will Win

The Blue Devils don’t have the offense to keep up the pace.

Yeah, the Duke defense has been good, but it’s not going to be a rock against a rested Louisville offense looking to come back roaring after the Clemson game a few weeks ago. But this one might be about the Cardinal D.

Duke’s passing game has been inconsistent at times, non-existent for stretches, and a total disaster against Virginia, giving the ball away five times in the ugly loss.

If the Cardinals can get up to a 14-0 first quarter lead, it’ll be game over.

Jackson is obviously the star who makes the nation’s top offense go, but this might be Brandon Radcliff’s first half. The Cardinals will go fast, crank up the tempo, and try to make the Duke D uncomfortable from the start, and it’ll begin up front with the offensive line blasting away for Radcliff, who’s averaging over eight yards per carry and should get more work this week. He hasn’t been a workhorse yet, but this should be the night he runs the ball more than 20 times for the first time all year as the Cardinals get even more physical than usual.

What’s Going To Happen?

You don’t think Louisville will be looking to come up with a wee bit of a statement after the Clemson loss? The Blue Devil defense will be plucky, but the Cardinal machine will get roaring right out of the gate on its first drive,
