Bowl and Conference Implications

Nothing is set in stone considering there are no hard and fast rules for the bowl tie-ins, but Louisiana Tech is likely to go to the New Orleans Bowl either way – possibly against Louisiana-Lafayette if the Ragin’ Cajuns become bowl eligible – while Western Kentucky would most likely go to either the Boca Raton Bowl, or maybe the Heart of Dallas depending on the matchup.

What Does Each Team Need To Do?

How can this not be fun?

These two played one of the best games of the season in a wild 55-52 Louisiana Tech win, hanging on for dear life as the Hilltoppers came roaring back with a 21-point fourth quarter and a chance to win on the final drive.

There’s no secret formula here. Both teams throw lots and lots of passes, and both score lots and lots of points.

Blazing hot over the second half of the season, WKU has hit the 44-point mark in each of the last eight games, while Louisiana Tech cranked up 44 or more in six straight before last week’s loss to a very, very motivated Southern Miss.

Now it’s time to gear it back up to deal with a Hilltopper offense that’s fast and deadly.

WKU’s Mike White isn’t going to finish with the 5,000-yard season Brandon Doughty put up last year, but he’s been more than fine throwing for over 3,600 yards with 31 touchdowns and five picks. He made a valiant attempt at a late comeback in the loss to Louisiana Tech with 340 yards and five scores, coming up just short.

Helped by the receiving tandem of Taywan Taylor (82 catches for 1,392 yards and 14 scores) and Nicholas Norris (67 catches for 1,103 yards and 13 scores), WKU has the nation’s eighth-best passing attack.

But Louisiana Tech is No. 4.

The Bulldogs were getting a massive year out of QB Ryan Higgins before a meltdown against USM, throwing three picks and now scores with way too many passes going nowhere.

Call it an aberration.

Carlos Henderson has caught 63 passes for 1,204 yards and 16 scores as the dangerous deep threat, while Trent Taylor catches everything else with a whopping 113 grabs for close to 1,500 yards and ten scores.

So, essentially, last team with the ball wins.

What’s Going To Happen?

They’re mirror images of each other.

They both throw and throw some more, they both put up lots and lots or points, the both have brilliant return games, and they both can play just enough defense when they absolutely have to.

But WKU has a slightly better secondary.

They might have lost the first time around, but the Hilltoppers will get their revenge when it counts, getting just a few stops in the second half – and a key takeaway – to win a thriller.
