Is Kentucky really and truly in the bowl hunt?
The Cats lost the game they couldn’t afford to lose against Southern Miss to start the season, but everything else has gone according to plan, helped by wins over South Carolina and Mississippi State. Now they need two wins over the final five games with a layup against Austin Peay still to play.
So, beat Mizzou, go bowling. That might be easier said than done against a desperate Tiger team needing to find something positive.
Missouri has been a disaster over the last three weeks in different ways. The offense was an embarrassment on the road at LSU and Florida, and last week the defense didn’t show up in a loss to Middle Tennessee that didn’t kill the season, but put it in a coma.
With South Carolina and Vanderbilt up next, the Tigers can go on a terrific run to get back in the bowl chase if they can come up with a win, but to do that, the team needs to find something defensively it can build on.
Kentucky might not have a big-time offense, but everyone’s getting fat on a Tiger defensive front that’s not stopping anyone’s ground game and allowed 133 points over the last three games.
How will Missouri pull this off? Turnovers. Kentucky gives the ball away over and over again, turning it over two times or more in every game this year and losing the turnover margin in every game but the opener against Southern Miss.
It’ll be a little bit of a shootout, but Drew Lock and the Tiger passing game will finally be able to overcome the shockingly bad D.
