What does a team need to get over a rough loss? Kansas is coming to town.
West Virginia doesn’t control its own destiny, but it can win at least a share of the Big 12 championship by winning out, and it can take the conference outright by winning the last five games of the year and getting an Oklahoma State loss, after losing last week to the Cowboys 37-20.
The Mountaineers weren’t awful in the loss, but they turned the ball over a season-tying high three times and, for the first time all year, didn’t force a takeaway. The offense was balanced, and the defense was okay, but it was a bad day against a good team on the road.
Beat up Kansas, and all will be back to right before going to Texas.
The Jayhawks also lost big to Oklahoma State, and after getting bombed on by Oklahoma, they’ve lost their last three games by a combined score of 149-30.
The close call 24-23 loss to TCU seems a million years ago.
Six of the losses have been blowouts, the offense is getting worse, and after years of being mired in misery, the program isn’t getting any better.
But do the Mountaineers have the running backs to crank it up on the ground?
Rushel Shell is banked up with a leg problem, and second-leading rusher Justin Crawford is playing through a leg injury of his own. It won’t matter, though, if Skyler Howard gets the passing game going early.
Expect a bounceback win for the Mountaineers as the defense loads up and shuts down the punchless Jayhawk attack. West Virginia will come up with a few first quarter touchdowns and this will be over fast.
