Jalen Hurd to transfer from the Tennessee: What Does It All Mean?
– According to various reports, Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd has informed head coach Butch Jones that he plans to transfer. He’s looking to become a tight end or even a wide receiver, and he’s looking to do it somewhere else, adding to problems and issues for a Volunteer program whose season continues to go into the tank.
– Hurd came into the season as one of the nation’s top running back prospects, coming off a 1,288-yard, 12-touchdown season and as the team’s leading rusher over his first two years. Despite being banged up and missing time this season, he’s still the team’s leading rusher with 451 yards and three scores, but he’s only averaging 3.7 yards per carry. John Kelly got the bulk of the work against South Carolina with 94 yards on 14 carries, while Hurd ran eight times for just 16 yards.
– Is Hurd a receiver? At 6-4 and 240 pounds, he’s got prototypical tight end size and terrific speed and athleticism, but he’s a tight end more than a big wideout. He has ten catches for 81 yards and two scores this season, and has nice enough hands to make 67 grabs over the last three years.
– The Tennessee season goes from bad to even uglier. This was the year. This was the team. South Carolina, Georgia, and Missouri all are building back up again under new head coaches, Kentucky and Vanderbilt and Kentucky and Vanderbilt, and Florida is good, but not truly special. The Vols had to get by the Gators, and they did the job, but they couldn’t get by Alabama or Texas A&M – no shame there – before bottoming out against South Carolina.
But the team was playing with fire all season long. It got a miracle bounce to survive Appalachian State, came up with several key turnovers against Virginia Tech, and needed a Hail Mary to beat Georgia. But the O line isn’t blocking – the team averaged under four yards per carry – and the team is making too many mistakes, it’s not moving the ball well enough, and the season has now turned into a total disaster.
And now Jalen Hurd appears to be leaving the sinking ship.
