Call this an elimination game in the Big Ten championship chase.

Both teams need help to pull off a division title, and the winner of this game has to win out to get into the discussion, but at least they’re still alive after a few rocky moments when it seemed like everything would fall apart.

Iowa has had two weeks off to get past the loss to Wisconsin, but if it wins out and the Badgers and Northwestern each lose one more game, it’s back to the Big Ten title game.

In Penn State’s perfect world, it wins this week, and Iowa takes care of Michigan next week to open up the path to the East. Michigan needs to lose twice and the Nittany Lions have to beat Indiana, Rutgers and Michigan State – not a problem – after getting past the Hawkeyes.

All of a sudden, the Penn State offense is on fire with a record-setting performance against Purdue and with explosions at just the right time late in wins over Minnesota and Ohio State, and a great game against Maryland as part of the four-game winning streak.

RB Saquon Barkley has been special, running for 202 yards against The Terps, 99 against the Buckeyes, and 207 against Purdue – crushing the Boilermakers on just 18 carries, to go along with 70 receiving yards on just three catches.

Can the Iowa run defense step up its game now that it’s rested? It’s been solid over the last three games, and it’s allowing under four yards per carry, but allowing a rushing score seems to matter. The Hawkeyes are 4-0 when not allowing a rushing score, and 1-3 when giving one up.

And it works the other way, too.

Iowa is 5-0 when rushing for over 100 yards, and 0-3 when being stuffed for under the century mark.

Penn State’s run defense has allowed fewer than 150 rushing yards twice, and it’s not going to do it this week as the Hawkeye lines play tougher, the team will look sharper, and the team will win the turnover battles on the road.

Oddly enough, over the last six games, Iowa is 0-3 at home and 3-0 away from Iowa City. It’ll be fine under the pressure of playing in Happy Valley.
