Northwestern (1-3) vs. Iowa (3-1) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, IA
Why Northwestern Will Win
The Iowa offense is stuck in neutral.
It’s not a high-powered offense that’s putting points up on the board as needed against mediocre teams.
This is supposed to be when the Hawkeyes blow through the first four games and make a national statement that they’re going to be a Big Ten powerhouse, but North Dakota State stuffed the ground game cold and Rutgers brought things to a dead stop at times.
Iowa is doing most of the other things Iowa is supposed to be doing, but this isn’t the type of team that’ll explode for 40 points on a strong defense like last year’s team did against the Wildcats.
This isn’t last year’s Northwestern team, either, but the passing attack is starting to click okay. It’s not efficient, and it’s not enough to break free Justin Jackson and the ground game, but unlike last year when there wasn’t any hope of doing much of anything when Clayton Thorson had to throw, at least this year’s offense can generate yards.
The Cats need the game to bog down into a low-scoring affair that comes down to one or two plays at the end, and that’s exactly what this will be. However …
Why Iowa Will Win
Northwestern doesn’t seem able to come up with those one or two plays.
There’s a fine line between genius and doghouse with the Northwestern program, and this year it’s not getting the defensive nastiness up front, and it’s not getting the same breaks and key moments that last year’s team was able to.
Iowa needs to be patient. Okay, so this isn’t the Hawkeye team of last year and it’s still trying to find itself. That’s fine as long as it’s about to out-Northwestern, Northwestern.
Iowa has lost just one turnover all year, and it just so happened to be a pick in the loss to NDSU. The defense might not be taking the ball away at an alarming rate again, but it’s +5 overall helped by an offense that’s not giving anyone any free breaks.
Northwestern can’t score unless it gets a whole lot of help, so if Iowa can get a number on the board early and not screw up from there, it should be just fine – even if it doesn’t look all pretty.
What’s Going To Happen?
Iowa won’t explode, and Northwestern doesn’t know how to score. It’s not exactly going to be scintillating, but it’ll be a close, tough game – tune in with ten minutes left to see all you’ll need to.
The Hawkeye defense will be slightly better than the Wildcat D.
