Why Iowa State Will Win
Will Iowa have the same issues on defense it had against Iowa State?
The D wasn’t quite the same against Miami University after LB Josey Jewell was ejected for targeting, but it’s all relative. The RedHawks never really threatened – especially on the ground – but the offense worked well enough late to be a concern. Miami’s offense isn’t supposed to work on anyone, much less a defense as strong as Iowa’s.
The Cyclone ground game went nowhere against Northern Iowa, but the passing attack clicked with Allen Lazard catching six passes for 129 yards and a score. Joel Lanning had a nice performance outside of two key picks – and he should be effective against an Iowa secondary that, again, struggled against an MU offense it shouldn’t have had any problems stopping.
Why Iowa Will Win
Oh yeah, the Iowa State running game.
UNI has a nice run defense and should be good throughout the season, but it’s still an FCS team that just shut down the Cyclones allowing 51 yards on just 25 carries. Mike Warren didn’t go anywhere.
The Iowa defense wasn’t that bad against Miami University. The secondary might have given up a few oh-by-the-way plays, but overall there wasn’t any real threat. The defensive front should be far stronger-looking this week, while the offense should rumble at will.
Iowa doesn’t have a dangerous rushing quarterback like UNI’s Aaron Bailey, but it’s got the 1-2 tandem of backs in Akrum Wadley and LeShun Daniels coming off big performances against MU. The offense shouldn’t have to press – run the ball, let C.J. Beathard make the easy throws, rely on the defense to step up and be better. The formula should work.
What’s Going To Happen?
Throw the emotion out of the situation, and throw the desperation aside, too.
Of course Iowa State will try taking its game to another level after losing in Week One, and to make a statement against its in-state rival, but it’s not going to matter much against an Iowa team coming off an okay performance and looking to do even more.
Head coach Kirk Ferentz has a new contract extension, the team has the pieces in place to dominate the tempo of the game, and it should all be in place for a solid Hawkeye win. The Iowa State offense will sputter once again.
