Why Wake Forest Will Win

The defense has been lights out so far. It hasn’t faced a slew of devastating offenses, but the Demon Deacons are allowing just 248 yards per game and not giving up a thing against the run.

Duke Ejiofor leads an aggressive defensive front with 6.5 of the team’s 21 tackles for loss – and 4.5 of the ten sacks – getting to the backs before they can do anything. So far in three games, opponents have gained just 239 yards averaging 2.4 yards per pop. Devine Redding and the IU ground attack have been fine, but not devastating so far.

There’s talent on the Hoosier attack, and the offense overall is putting up yards, but it’s been a disaster on third downs converting just 29% of their tries. The Demon Deacon D is okay on third downs, but it’s coming up with the meaningful stop time and again. Teams just aren’t going on long drives against this group.

Why Indiana Will Win

The Demon Deacon offense is bad enough, and it can’t afford a slew of injuries. That’s exactly what’s happening, with QB Kendal Hinton and rising star RB Cade Carney both getting knocked out of the Delaware game – technically, Hinton seemed to twist something on his own. The D picked up the slack, and John Wolford is a veteran quarterback, but as is Wake Forest is averaging just 348 yards per game and hasn’t shown any pop or flash.

All Indiana has to do is score early. Put up a few first quarter scoring drives, take the Wake Forest offense out of its comfort zone, and things should be okay.

The key for the IU O after the two-week break is to be stingy. So far it’s lost just one fumble with the team at a sensational +5 in turnover margin. The D hasn’t been great, but it’s been more aggressive with three takeaways in each of the first two games.

Wake Forest can’t win this game without a little bit of help. Indiana, at least so far, doesn’t look like it’ll provide it.

What’s Going To Happen?

Which team is ready to take that next step forward? Wake Forest has been terrific, but with the time off to rest up and prepare, and with all the bumps and bruises on the Demon Deacon offense, Indiana comes up with a less-than-gorgeous win, but a win to stay unbeaten going into the Big Ten problems – Michigan State, at Ohio State, Nebraska – coming up next.
