Indiana (3-3) vs. Northwestern (3-3) Game Preview

Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Ryan Field, Evanston, IL
If it’s possible to be really, really fired up to be 3-3, both Indiana and Northwestern should be just that.
The Wildcats were miserable to start the season with a strange 1-3 start that could’ve easily have been 3-1, but with no hope whatsoever with road games at Iowa and Michigan State to follow, something crazy happened – they discovered their offense.
All of a sudden, the line started hitting, Clayton Thorson started throwing like the next Trevor Siemian, and the O that hasn’t been there for years blew up for 38 points against the Hawkeyes and 54 against Michigan State in stunning wins.
What’s been the difference? The last two games have been the two best this year for the ground game thanks to two dominant performances from Justin Jackson, running for 171 yards against Iowa and 188 against Michigan State.
But by Indiana’s standards, the run defense has been terrific.
The Hoosiers gave up more than 200 yards on the ground six times last season, but this year only Ohio State has had any luck against a tougher, stronger, more aggressive IU defensive front.
Yeah, Indiana has lost its last two games and three of the last four, but it was in all three of the defeats against Wake Forest, Ohio State and Nebraska. It’s playing well, the defense has been fine, and the team has been just dangerous enough and good enough to become a player in the Big Ten.
But Northwestern is playing too well.
The offense has its tempo rolling, the defense is starting to get tougher against the run, and overall, Northwestern is clicking. Finally.
Could the last two weeks really be enough to show that things have changed for a team that can’t seem to play the same game twice – really, it lost to Illinois State 9-7? Yeah. The Cats will keep on winning in a terrific game that’ll go down to the wire.
