Indiana football schedule predictions and early game-by-game preview for 2016. Projecting how the Hoosiers will do this year.
Can the Hoosiers come up with another bowl season? Can this be another big step forward after moving ahead last year with its terrific offense? Check out these Indiana football schedule predictions for every game.
Sept. 1 at FIU
It’s never boring to make a trip to Miami, but it’s also not all that fun to play in that South Florida heat in early September. The Hoosiers get a nationally televised Thursday night game to show off – it shouldn’t be too much of a problem for an offense that needs a tune up.
Preseason Prediction: Indiana 38, FIU 17
Sept. 10 vs. Ball State
If IU didn’t get all the kinks worked out in the opener, it will this week. The Cardinals should be better under new head coach Mike Neu, but they won’t be good enough to pull this off in the Hoosier home opener.
Preseason Prediction: Indiana 45, Ball State 17
Sept. 24 vs. Wake Forest
While it stinks to get a week off so early in the season – meaning it’s a ten-week run for the rest of the regular season – it should be a plus to prepare for a solid Demon Deacon team. This won’t get a ton of national attention, but it’ll be an entertaining game.
Preseason Prediction: Indiana 27, Wake Forest 23
Oct. 1 vs. Michigan State
Can the Hoosiers pull off a shocker at home? The Spartans have won seven straight in the series since 2006, and the IU defense hasn’t been within 100 miles of coming up with a stop in any of the losses. That’s not going to change, even though MSU is coming off a battle against Wisconsin.
Preseason Prediction: Michigan State 48, Indiana 20
Oct. 8 at Ohio State
This stat says it all: 0-22-1 since 1988. That’s what Indiana has done against Ohio State, and 1987 is the last time it came up with a win in Columbus. It’s not going to happen this time around, either, even after giving the Buckeyes a dogfight last year in a 34-27 loss.
Preseason Prediction: Ohio State 45, Indiana 16
Oct. 15 vs. Nebraska
It’s the first ever Big Ten meeting between the two schools, with the last get together coming in 1978 – a 69-17 Nebraska squeaker. The Hoosier running game will rumble at will, but the defense won’t be able to stop Tommy Armstrong in a great day from the Husker attack.
Preseason Prediction: Nebraska 38, Indiana 30
Oct. 22 at Northwestern
The two teams haven’t played since 2012 – a 44-29 Wildcat win – and this time around Northwestern will be coming off a day at Michigan State. Can the offense get the job done against a solid Northwestern defense? It’ll lose the turnover battle, and that’ll be just enough to get tagged in a sloppy performance.
Preseason Prediction: Northwestern 24, Indiana 17
Oct. 29 vs. Maryland
The slide continues. The Hoosiers will come off one bad game against Northwestern – and a fourth-straight loss – with another lousy performance in a home loss to a Maryland team that’ll scrape together a surprisingly solid game. D.J. Durkin’s defense will come up with a terrific stop late in a thriller.
Preseason Prediction: Maryland 36, Indiana 31
Nov. 5 at Rutgers
Just when it seems like the season is going in the tank, IU will bounce back from the losing streak with a terrific day on the road. The offense will finally click – it’ll be too much for the Scarlet Knights to keep up. It’ll be the win and the game the fans were waiting for during an ugly October.
Preseason Prediction: Indiana 41, Rutgers 27
Nov. 12 vs. Penn State
Another ugly stat: 1-18. That’s the all-time Indiana record against Penn State – winning 44-24 in 2013. The fun coming from the Rutgers game will continue with a tremendous home performance. Getting yards will be like pulling teeth for the IU offense, but the Nittany Lion attack will sputter and cough just enough to allow the Hoosiers to pull this off. Let’s make that all-time mark 2-18.
Preseason Prediction: Indiana 24, Penn State 20
Nov. 19 at Michigan
The Hoosiers HAD them last year. They ran the ball down the throat of the Wolverine defense in a heartbreaking 48-41 loss. There won’t be as much fun this time as Michigan rolled in the home finale.
Preseason Prediction: Michigan 37, Indiana 13
Nov. 26 vs. Purdue
With bowl eligibility on the line, the Hoosiers will win their fourth straight in the series in one of the wildest firefights of the Big Ten season. Both defenses will have a hard time holding serve, with IU coming up with the one big drive late to get the sixth win it needs to go bowling for the second year in a row.
Preseason Prediction: Indiana 48, Purdue 44
2016 Prediction: 6-6
2016 Big Ten Prediction: 3-6
