Illinois (1-4) vs. Rutgers (2-4) Game Preview

Game Time: 12:00 pm

If Illinois vs. Purdue last week was a play-in game for the honor of being the 14th-best team in a league that called itself the Big Ten, this might be for the championship.
To be fair to Rutgers, as ugly as it might have been over the last two weeks losing to Ohio State and Michigan by a combined score of 136-0, it was Ohio State and Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights pushed Iowa in a tight loss, and they had to deal with Washington to start the season.
There’s a chance Rutgers has faced three of this year’s College Football Playoff teams in the first six games. Now they’ll get to show what they can really do.
It’s not working so far for Lovie Smith, with the defense struggling a bit too much against the run while not getting nearly enough pop from an offense that hasn’t been able to keep up the pace.
Last week against Purdue, the Illini lost in overtime when they lost QB Wes Lunt to a leg injury and suffered injuries to a secondary that’s been one of the key positives. On the plus side, the running game blew up against the Boilermakers with 315 yards and three touchdowns helped by 137 yards and two scores from backup QB Chayce Crouch.
Watch out for Rutgers to start to play okay. All of a sudden, it’s going to show off that the offense can actually work a little bit after scoring seven points in the last three games. But finally, the Illini will come up with something positive with the first win against an FBS team in the Lovie era. The running game will carry them in the second half.
