And now this gets interesting.
It was a foregone conclusion that Houston was going to take the American Athletic title, much less the West, but with Navy’s win last week to knock the Cougars out of the College Football Playoff hunt, the division door is open.
It’s open for Navy. It’s open for Memphis. And it’s open for a Tulsa team that’s got the offense to be a factor.
Forget about winning the division with the dates against Navy, Memphis and UCF on the road – along with this one – but the team is good enough to beat anyone left on the schedule thanks to a balanced and explosive offense and a defense that’s been far better than the one ripped apart in recent years.
But now the Golden Hurricane might be the one needing to weather the storm.
Houston still has plenty to play for. It still wants to win the conference title, and it still wants to get a big bowl spot. With Louisville still to play, in a perfect world, it still wants to come up with a fight for a playoff bid.
But first, the Cougars have to gear up the defense again after not being able to handle the Navy option attack in the rain. That won’t be a problem with an improved day from the defensive front and yet another terrific day from Greg Ward.
He struggled a wee bit in the rain, and against the Navy defense, throwing two picks to offset the 359 yards and three scores. However, he got the ground game going taking off for 94 yards and a score – that’s nothing compared to the 182 yards and three touchdowns he tore off in last year’s win over Tulsa.
Tulsa struggled too much against mediocre Fresno State and SMU teams over the last two weeks, and now it’s about to get hit and hit hard by Ward and a Cougar offense looking to bounce back.
The Golden Hurricane might be good, but they’re about to get hammered by a statement from the Cougars.
