Bowl and Conference Implications
Hawaii becomes bowl eligible – even with a losing record – with a win. This is the last game of the year for UMass.
What’s Going To Happen?
If Hawaii wants a 14th game this year – likely at home in the Hawaii Bowl – all it has to do is beat a bad UMass team that’s using this like it’s own bowl game.
There are worse places to finish up a college football season than Honolulu.
Just when it seemed like the Minutemen were competitive, tough, and just good enough to be more than a light scrimmage for the good teams – they battled Florida and Mississippi State hard – they got rolled by Troy and BYU, allowing a total of 103 points in the last two losses on the road.
The problem now is an offense that’s struggling to score enough. Turnovers are a big, big problem, and the defense as a whole has been a disaster against anyone who can throw, but this is still a plucky team.
UMass can’t run, but if the passing game is clicking right away, Hawaii has reason to worry.
Hawaii hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire, getting destroyed by San Diego State and Boise State by a combined score of 107-16, and then almost blowing its shot at bowl eligibility with a way-too-tight 14-13 win at Fresno State.
There’s absolutely no run defense happening, but that’s okay since UMass can’t run.
This will turn out to be far too close for the Rainbow Warriors, especially considering UMass QB Andrew Ford is bombing away lately – even if the points aren’t coming.
At home, will get a decent enough effort from the D to get by, and QB Dru Brown will come up with his best performance in over a month as Hawaii pulls this out in dramatic fashion.
