There but for a stumble against South Alabama, San Diego State would be ranked in the top 20 and be the odds-on favorite to get the Group of Five’s New Year’s Six bowl bid.
The Aztecs should be able to coast to the West Division title, but Hawaii can make it interesting with a win this week.
The Warriors are two games down in the standings after losing the New Mexico last week, but a win puts them in the mix for the division race if they can then beat Boise State and Fresno State, and get a little help along the way.
But mostly, a win keeps bowl hopes alive.
The Rainbow Warriors have been interesting, with each of the last three games decided by a touchdown or less, but losing of the last two thanks to a spotty run defense that tries hard, but doesn’t get the job done.
Hawaii has allowed 237 yards or more on the ground in each of the last three games, allowing 5.4 yards per pop with 22 scores.
And now comes Donnel Pumphrey.
Even with everyone trained to stop him, he keeps getting better and better, running for 1,469 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 6.6 yards per carry and hitting the 220-yard mark in two of the last three games. He’ll keep it going this week at home. While San Diego State won’t throw well enough to play the game open, it won’t need to.
