The East division of the American Athletic Conference is owned by South Florida at the moment, but it looked for a while like East Carolina and Cincinnati could’ve and should’ve been a major factor in the in the race.
Instead, they’re bringing up the rear as the only two teams in the conference without a league win.
East Carolina has a great win against NC State under its belt, but then the wheels came off with four straight losses getting shockingly blown out by Virginia Tech, UCF and South Florida as part of a brutal stretch. Yeah, the Pirates have a run of four road games in five dates, but they were supposed to be better than this.
The passing game has been fantastic, and the defense okay, but turnovers have been a big, big problem – they have yet to win the turnover margin and are a -9 on the season – and the O hasn’t been able to close. It’s able to crank out yards, but it hasn’t generated enough points when it’s in range.
Cincinnati also got blown out by USF, but last week was worse with a stunning 20-9 clunker of a loss to UConn with an inefficient passing game and a ground attack that’s averaging just 124 yards a game.
The offensive line has been a nightmare. It’s full of injuries, and it’s not generating a push – the Bearcats gained two yards on 22 carries against UConn.
Can Gunner Kiel kickstart the Bearcats?
The one-time star get for the program – and top recruit who bounced around before landing in UC – will get his shot despite completing just 3-of-11 passes for 47 yards in his limited time this year. But he’s got the size, the arm, and the upside to potentially make it all go and change around the season.
But which team will get back on track?
Neither team has been all that sharp, but East Carolina has more of an offense. As long as the Pirates don’t get destroyed in turnover margin, they should be able to pull up out of the slide and get the road win.
