North Carolina needs a little help – it needs a Virginia Tech loss – but it’s deep in the hunt to take the Coastal title for the second year in a row. And like last year, if it can win out – and if it can get to the ACC title game and, this time around, beat Clemson – it might really and truly be in the mix for the College Football Playoff.
The Tar Heels overcame a blowout loss to Virginia Tech to win two straight road games, beating Miami and Virginia with the effective offense and a secondary that’s doing a solid job.
That lost to the Hokies came in in a storm, and the other loss came in the opener against Georgia. Win the last four games, and the Tar Heels will be red hot at just the right time.
But can they hold down the Georgia Tech rushing attack? That’s been the big problem at times this year, and now they’re going to have problems on the defensive front.
Georgia Tech is a win away from going bowling, winning two straight with the offense doing a nice enough job after a rocky mid-section to the season. However, with three of the last four games on the road, and Virginia Tech and Georgia the other two away games, this and the Virginia game might be the two best options to get to six wins.
The O is rolling, coming off a 341-yard rushing day two weeks ago against Duke to hit the 200-yard mark for the sixth time in seven games, and while UNC might have improved against the run – allowing under 200 yards in each of the last three games after getting torched over the first five – but it’s about to be hit hard.
Fortunately for UNC, it’ll get by with a big day from an offense that’ll keep the chains rolling against the nation’s worst third down defense. The Tar Heels won’t shoot themselves in the foot as the O rolls on drive after drive.
