Fresno State (1-9) vs. Hawaii (4-7) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 19
Game Time: 7:00 pm
Venue: Bulldog Stadium, Fresno, CA
Hawaii needs to win its last two games to go bowling, and while it might mean an extra game in Honolulu, it’ll happily take it as a major positive in Nick Rolovich’s first year.
The Rainbow Warriors were destroyed by San Diego State and Boise State over the last two weeks by a combined score of 107-16, and they’ve lost four of the last five games in an ugly run.
But according to all the bowl rules, all it takes is six wins to get it done, and as long as Hawaii gets by Fresno State, it will almost certainly do that with UMass making the trip next week.
The passing game hasn’t gotten rolling, and the defense hasn’t gotten any better as the year has gone on, especially against decent passing teams, but Fresno State should be the antidote for that.
Jeff Tedford isn’t on board quite yet to handle the Fresno State turnaround effort, and he’s going to have a whole lot of work to do with a team currently on an eight-game losing streak and getting worse and worse. On the plus side, the last two games are at home against Hawaii and San Jose State, but to make that happen, the run defense can’t be a disaster, and the offense needs to manufacture points.
Can the Bulldogs play the spoiler role over a bad Hawaii team and ruin its bowl dreams? Nope.
As bad as Hawaii has been, the running game will power its way through the rough parts of the game, it’ll control the clock and the tempo, and it’ll overcome an early Fresno State flurry to take over in the second half to get one step away from going bowling.
