Why Florida Is Going To Win
Has the Georgia offense suddenly gotten better over the last two weeks?
The passing game is great, and then the running game is a disaster. The running game rocks, and then Jacob Eason can’t throw a lick. The Bulldogs can’t come up with the same offensive performance twice in a strange and quirky season, and now it has to deal with a rested Florida defense that didn’t exactly need the time off.
Yeah, there are bumps and bruises in the linebacking corps that needed a little while to get healthier, but the Gators are second in the nation in total defense, No. 1 in pass efficiency D, and No. 2 in scoring defense allowing seven points or fewer in four games and holding down a dangerous Missouri passing game.
Overall, this Gators should be among the nation’s freshest teams with just that one game against Mizzou since October 1st, thanks to the Hurricane Matthew scheduling snafu. While that’ll turn into a problem in November, for now, the time off should bring a whole new spring to the team’s step.
Florida doesn’t have to do anything funky. Use the power running game, hope Luke Del Rio is sharper than he was against Missouri, and let the secondary dominate.
How good is the Florid pass defense? UMass started out the season hitting 9-of-17 passes. That’s the only time this year any team has hit half of its passes against the Gators. Tennessee and Joshua Dobbs came up with 319 yards and four touchdown passes, and those are the only four scoring throws allowed all season long.
Good luck, Mr. Eason.
Why Georgia Is Going To Win
Georgia, make Luke Del Rio beat you.
Kirby Smart has had two weeks off to prepare for an okay Florida offense, but it’s not like the Dawgs have to try figuring out how to slow down some sort of high-powered point-a-minute attack. The run D has been stellar all year, rarely giving up the second-level run and stuffing South Carolina and Vandy for a total of 92 yards on 58 carries over the previous two weeks.
The Georgia secondary hasn’t been a disappointment, but it’s had way more than its share of rocky moments early on. Even so, there won’t be a whole lot of deep ball plays to deal with. Florida will have to dink and dunk, and while Del Rio’s completion percentage will be solid, he’s going to need the yards-after-catch totals to ramp up against this group.
The D needs to be fantastic, and the offense has to be mistake-free and consistent, but more than anything else for Georgia, it’s going to need the Cocktail Party magic to happen.
As bad as Eason has been at times, he’s been able to fight to the finish, doing what he’s needed to do against Missouri, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt, even if he wasn’t able to come up with the wins.
Don’t expect the moment to be too big for him, even against the Florida pressure. The coaching staff isn’t going to make him bomb away, but with time off to prepare, watch out for the offense to come up with the right wrinkles – the week off should help the Georgia O more than Florida’s.
What’s Going To Happen?
This game over the years goes in swings, and often defies logic and reason with the Gators winning the last two games after losing three in a row.
How do the Dawgs pull this off?
The offensive line has to come up with its best game of the season, and the pass rush has to find an extra gear it hasn’t had all season long.
Yeah, Florida’s defense is statistically awesome, and the blowouts have been impressive, but the Gators are 0-1 against teams that’ll go bowling, and 5-0 against teams that’ll be sitting at home for the holidays.
It’s the Cocktail Party. Great ready for a new chapter and a new era in the rivalry to kick in post-Mark Richt.
