Supposedly, there will be college football in Gainesville this weekend.
In an ever-growing case of program said, program said that’s getting more and more bizarre and more and more contentious after the LSU-Florida game was postponed, the one key thing brought to the forefront after last weekend is just how close the Gators might be to playing for the SEC championship for a second year in a row.
If Tennessee loses to Alabama this weekend – hardly a stretch – and Florida wins out, Florida will play for the SEC title. And, of course, don’t dismiss the idea that Florida and LSU figure it all out, play, and the Gators win.
Will they be able to somehow fit in the game next week, when they’re supposed to rest up and prepare for Georgia? Will it come later in the season? For now, the Gators just got two weeks off to rest up and get healthier.
That means QB Luke Del Rio will likely be ready to roll as he gets over a knee injury, and the banged up linebacking corps and defensive line should be in far better shape than they would be coming off a date against LSU.
Mizzou had to face LSU in the first game post-Les Miles, and it ran into a buzzsaw losing 42-7 in Baton Rouge. But the Tigers also got two weeks off to rest up, and now there’s a good chance to go on a terrific run if they can pull off the win.
Middle Tennessee, Kentucky, at South Carolina, Vanderbilt – that’s the next month after this, but the Gators could be just good enough bombing away to pull off the upset.
QB Drew Lock was on fire before dealing with the LSU defensive front, and now he has to try fighting through a Florida defense that got hit for 319 passing yards by Tennessee, but stopped everyone else to a dead stop. Of course, the Gators haven’t had to deal with a high-powered passing game outside of what the Vols brought.
Florida will crank up the running game and get more physical against a mediocre Mizzou run defense, and it’ll have the ball for close to 40 minutes. Lock will be okay, but he won’t have the ball enough.
