Is Florida really in the College Football Playoff chase?
No. 11 in the initial CFP rankings, the Gators are on the outside of the fun at the moment, but they have one massive advantage over several other key teams – they control their own destiny.
It’s this simple – Florida is seven wins away from the national championship.
After beating Georgia, and helped by Tennessee collapsing, the SEC East race seems like it’s over, but three of the last four games are on the road with Arkansas and a trip to LSU wrapped around a home game against South Carolina. Follow that up by a trip to Florida State, and it’s hardly going to be easy November to get through unscathed.
But the Gators are built for this, with a defense that’s not letting anyone breathe, and a tough enough ground attack hammer out time-chewing drives.
Essentially, Florida is what Arkansas is supposed to be under Bret Bielema.
The Hogs have had two weeks off to lick their wounds after getting destroyed by Auburn, and now they need to play tougher than they have all season long.
It’s not just the Auburn game; the Arkansas defensive front hasn’t been close against the run in key moments, and the D as a whole has been a nightmare when it comes to third downs and getting off the field.
However, they’ve got an explosive attack that can put up points in chunks, but can gear down, too. Even though Florida usually owns the time of possession, the Hogs really know how to pound down a clock, holding the ball for over 35 minutes a game.
The passing game will take center stage, with Arkansas QB Austin Allen’s banged up knee just good enough to give it a go against a stifling Florida secondary that might be No. 1 in the nation in pass efficiency defense, but hasn’t faced a whole slew of high-powered offense.
The Gators have faced some great quarterbacks – Drew Lock, Jacob Eason, Joshua Dobbs – but not a whole slew of dangerous passing games. Tennessee bombed away in comeback mode to roll up 319 yards and four scores to pull off the win – Florida has allowed just one touchdown pass to everyone else. That’ll quickly change.
Allen was stuffed by Auburn, but he’s been on against everyone else, including Alabama and Texas A&M. He’ll throw for three touchdowns and over 200 yards, while the defense comes up with a few key takeaways to stall a few strong Gator drives.
The two weeks off will turn out to be the big difference for the Hogs.
