All of a sudden, Florida International might be a bit of a player.
Now, after the last two weeks with head coach Ron Cooper at the helm, the Golden Panthers aren’t just 2-0, they’re tied for the lead in the East.
If helps to play Florida Atlantic and UTEP instead of UCF, Maryland and Indiana, but FIU lost to UMass, too. Now the offense is starting to generate drives. Now the yards are turning into points. Now the team is starting to see a little bit of hope, but it desperately needs to win this week with Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee and WKU to follow.
Charlotte also joined the Beat Florida Atlantic club last week with Hassan Klugh coming up with a big performance taking over completing 14-of-17 passes for 223 yards and three scores with a pick to go along with a rushing touchdown.
The 49er secondary isn’t coming up with picks, it’s not coming up with stops, and it’s not able to get off the field. Can Klugh be enough to really and truly kickstart the Golden Panthers into the second half of the season? He’ll need to be to overcome the Charlotte running game.
The 49ers got their second huge day in the last three weeks out of RB Kalif Phillips, running for 132 yards in the win over FAU, and he should be ready to blow up again.
The two offense should be just god enough against the other team’s bad defense to make this fun until the end. FIU will do a little more offensively against a Charlotte defense that won’t get off the field.
