East Carolina (3-5) vs. Tulsa (6-2) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 5
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Chapman Stadium, Tulsa, OK
Very, very quietly, Tulsa has turned into a dangerous factor in the American Athletic Conference race winning four of the last five games with a high-powered offense that’s doing everything right.
The Golden Hurricane are averaging 257 passing yards per game and running for 242 per outing, scoring 45 or more in all six wins – and 31 in the loss to Houston and three in the loss to Ohio State.
East Carolina found its own offensive explosion last week in a 41-3 win over UConn, finally busting through a five-game losing streak with injuries and defensive meltdowns proving costly in what looked like such a promising season over the first two games, including a win over NC State.
The passing game continues to roll, with Philip Nelson hitting 250 yards or more in every game but the loss to South Florida. It’s been an entertaining team, but what’s been the big problem? Turnovers.
The Pirates have given it up 17 times on the year with the team a -9 in turnover margin. However, they were a +3 last week against UConn with no turnovers. The result? 41-3 win. It was the first time all year they won the battle, but now they’re going to have a problem doing it again.
The Tulsa secondary has been stunningly good – for a program used to awful defense – while doing a great job of coming up with takeaways lately. And that’s going to be the difference.
Both passing games will roll in a firefight, but Tulsa will be a +2 in takeaways, capitalizing on the mistakes to keep the terrific season rolling.
