Clemson (9-1) vs. Wake Forest (6-4) Game Preview

Louisville, this week you’re the biggest Demon Deacon fan in college football.
(Note, written before the Cardinals play Houston on Thursday night.) Assuming Lamar Jackson and company take care of business against the Cougars, they need to beat Kentucky next week, and then hope for a 13th game in the ACC Championship to have any real hope of getting into the College Football Playoff.
Clemson can all but end UofL’s hopes with a win, while taking the ACC Atlantic title before gearing it up for the South Carolina showdown next week. Thanks to the loss to Pitt, though, the Tigers can’t afford a mistake – they’ve got to win their last three games to get in, but on the plus side, they’re one of the few teams that controls their own destiny.
Did the loss to Pitt show how vulnerable Clemson is, or was it simply a fantastic game against a dangerous offensive team? Yes and yes.
The Tigers are playing like they could use a little bit of a break to heal up and rest up, but they’re still a whole bunch of fun.
Yeah, Deshaun Watson threw three picks against the Panthers, but he also set an ACC record with 580 yards and three scores on 70 throws – it was the third time in four games he’s thrown for 378 yards or more, and five games in the last seven with 300 yards or more.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest is playing some D.
Don’t look at the 44-12 final score against Louisville – the Demon Deacons were deep in the heart of that game up until the last ten minutes.
There might not be much in the way of a passing game to give the Tigers problems like Pitt did, and the offense likes to slow things down to a dead stop at times and do a nice job of getting the defense off the field, but this will be about the turnovers.
Watson is throwing too many picks, and the Tigers are struggling too much when it comes to turnover margin, while Wake Forest is 11th in the nation in the stat. If the Demon Deacons aren’t a +3, forget about it.
Forget about it.
Clemson will rally back quickly from the loss to Pitt, with the defensive front stepping up and shutting down the Demon Deacon offense cold. Watson will be efficient, the running game will be good enough, and the Tigers will roll to a business-like win to keep the CFP season alive.
