Even with the loss to Memphis a few weeks ago, Temple roared into the lead dog spot in the American Athletic Conference title chase with wins over UCF and South Florida, and now with the easy part of the run to come.
Connecticut and Tulane are winnable road games, and East Carolina and Cincinnati need to be handled at home if the Owls really are good enough to pull off the championship.
It’s not a hard formula – when Temple runs really, really well, it wins, going 5-0 when coming up with 90 yards or more, and 0-3 when going under.
Against USF, the Owls came up with one of the big shockers of a shocking AAC season, tearing off 319 yards and four scores, with Ryquell Armstead blowing up for 210 yards and two scores on big run after big run.
But now, for one of the few times this year, the Owls will have to try keeping up with a Cincinnati passing game that got a reboot last week.
The coaches turned to Gunner Kiel to try cranking up the offense, and he did just that with 348 yards and four scores – with Kahlil Lewis catching 11 passes for 150 yards and three scores – in the win over East Carolina.
Some had thrown to try coming back in games, but no one has committed to the passing game other than Penn State, with Trace McSorley and company connecting on 75% of their passes for 287 yards in the win.
Cincinnati’s line has been good in pass protection, and Temple doesn’t have much of a pass rush, but the game will be controlled throughout by the Owl running game that’ll hit the 200-yard mark, keeping Kiel on the sidelines way too often.
