Bowl and Conference Implications
UTSA will be bowl eligible with a win and can lock up a second-place finish in Conference USA West. Charlotte can finish tied for third in the East.
What’s Going To Happen?
UTSA wasn’t supposed to be anything more than a speedbump, and it looked that way over the first month of the season off to a rocky start, and then things started to turn around offensively.
Things haven’t always been smooth, and there have been some massive missteps along the way, but there have also been some big surprises. That’s to be expected from a team that’s still getting through the first season under a new head coach.
Frank Wilson has done a nice job of cranking up the offense, and he’s just getting started.
But can the Roadrunners take care of business at home to get one more win for a groundbreaking bowl bid?
Charlotte should’ve come into this game with a chance to go bowling, too, but it inexplicably gagged away a 22-21 loss to Rice, and then couldn’t keep up in a tight game against Middle Tennessee.
But the 49ers have enough of a ground game to keep the UTSA O off the field, and they’ve been able to take the ball away at times just enough to survive.
With a terrific run defense and an aggressive front line, UTSA isn’t going to get its ground attack going, meaning it might be Dalton Sturm or bust – if he’s the guy.
Charlotte is getting torched fro 300 yards per game through the air, but Sturm has struggled over the last few weeks, getting pulled for Jared Johnson, who did a decent enough job against Texas A&M to potentially get a long look.
No matter who’s under center, UTSA isn’t going to blow it at home.
