Bowl and Conference Implications
They’re both out of the MAC title chase, but they’re going bowling. The winner will lock up at least fourth place in the West, and could tie Northern Illinois for third, while the loser will finish fifth.
What’s Going To Happen?
Eastern Michigan might have lost three of its last four games, but this is already one of the best seasons in decades no matter what happens the rest of the way.
The offense continues to be impressive, especially through the air, but the secondary has been roasted way too often over the second half of the season, and in the overtime loss to Northern Illinois, the normally reliable defensive front got ripped up for a season-high 324 rushing yards and three scores.
There’s no threat of CMU pulling an NIU with leading rusher Devon Spalding struggling through a shoulder problem for an attack that relies mostly on Cooper Rush and the passing attack.
Rush hasn’t ripped it up like he did over the first quarter of the season, but he’s consistent – he’s only been under the 200-yard mark once, against Western Michigan – and if he can keep the picks to a minimum, the offense rolls.
The Chippewas came up with the key win they had to have against Ohio last week to get bowl eligible, and they’ll keep it all rolling at home with Rush keeping the chains moving throughout against a good EMU defense that gives up way too many third down conversions.
