California (3-2) vs. Oregon State (1-3) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 8
Game Time: 9:00 pm
Venue: Reser Stadium, Corvallis, OR
Network: Pac-12 Network
Cal might not be perfect so far defensively, but the offense has been roaring enough to roar by Texas and get out to a somewhat surprising 3-2 start. However, it was the defense that came up with the big stop to get by Utah last week to stay alive in the Pac-12 chase.
And then there’s Oregon State.
The Beavers are struggling in Gary Andersen’s second season with an offense that can’t find any production with the passing game and no pop from the spread rushing attack. Just when it seemed like they had a chance to turn things around against Boise State and Colorado, they got blown out in both games.
Now they get a run of three home games in four weeks with Utah and Washington State also having to come to Reser, but those won’t matter much if they can’t find a way to slow down the Cal machine.
Davis Webb has been exactly what the offense has needed – only with a few too many interceptions. Even so, he’s a yardage machine to go along with four touchdown passes or more in each of the five games. To put the two offenses into perspective, Oregon State has thrown for 691 yards and three touchdowns all season long – Webb threw for 884 yards and nine touchdowns in the last two games.
Considering the Beaver secondary hasn’t been able to come up with a pick against an FBS team this year and got rolled last week by the Colorado passing game, this won’t be pretty unless the offense can come up with a huge day from the running attack to keep Webb off the field.
Even that won’t be enough.
