The Bears ripped through the Texas defense to pull off a stunner, while the Sun Devils survived a scary day at UTSA. Check out the Cal vs. Arizona State fearless prediction and game preview.
Cal (2-1) vs. Arizona State (3-0) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 24th
Game Time: 10:00 pm
Venue: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ
Why Cal Will Win
The offense is working even better than anyone could’ve suspected after losing the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.
Jared Goff was great, but Davis Webb is proving to be every bit as productive, and maybe even better bombing away for 1,359 yards and 13 touchdowns with three picks – all the interceptions coming against San Diego State – keeping the pressure on some of the nation’s most talented defenses.
SDSU has a D that’s even better than the one that dominated last season when it finished in the top ten in most categories, and Webb rolled for 522 yards.
Texas has a much, much better secondary than the stats might indicated – considering it faced DeShone Kizer in the opener and Webb last week – giving up 396 yards and four scores.
ASU has the offense, but the secondary has been abysmal so far. What’s the Cal comp? Texas Tech, and Patrick Mahomes and company rolled for 540 yards and five scores. Arizona State threw without a problem, and UTSA QB Dalton Sturm looked like Andy Dalton last week against the Sun Devils.
Be very, very shocked if Webb doesn’t hit 350 yards without breathing hard.
Why Arizona State Will Win
Demario Richard and Kalen Ballage, have a whole lot of fun.
Ballage rumbled through the Texas Tech defense a few weeks ago, and they’re the ’85 Bears compared to the tackling ability of the Cal back seven.
Everyone’s getting fat on the Bear defense, with San Diego State and Texas combining for 641 yards and seven touchdowns over the last two weeks, and ASU should be able to do the same.
Cal might be able to match good running games with high-octane passing yards coming from Webb, but the inability to slow down anyone on the ground has been a problem and puts a ton of pressure on everything else to work well. Start turning the ball over, and the Bears can forget about it.
It’s been a relatively simple formula so far for Cal – it didn’t turn the ball over against Hawaii or Texas, and it won both games. It gave it away four times against SDSU, and lost.
ASU hasn’t been great so far at taking the ball away with just two so far – both against Texas Tech – but that’s partly because Mahomes had to throw the ball so much. Webb will have to throw it at least 50 times.
What’s Going To Happen?
So who’s the real deal? Will the power of ASU overcome the passing of Cal?
At home, and with an extra day to rest up and prepare, yeah. It’ll be a firefight that’ll push the over/under total off the charts in the second half.
The ASU offense will keep converting third down after third down, and ball control will matter a wee bit. The Sun Devils will be able to keep up in yet another wild Cal shootout.
