BYU (6-4) vs. Massachusetts (2-8) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 19
Game Time: 2:00 pm
Venue: LaVell Edwards Stadium, Provo, UT
BYU is playing out the string before going to the Poinsettia Bowl, while UMass is getting through the schedule before closing out at Hawaii – a not-that-bad reward to end the year.
The Minutemen have been interesting. They’re not good, and they don’t have any semblance of an offense at times, but it’s not a dead attack – scoring 28 points or more in each of the last four games – and the defense has generally been okay, except when it faces high-octane offenses.
They have a way of not getting totally destroyed, losing big to Louisiana Tech and Troy, but hanging around with Florida and Mississippi State.
BYU got bowl eligible with a layup against Southern Utah, and now it’s time to try padding the record with UMass this week and Utah State next week before going on to its contractually mandated bowl game.
The Cougars are rolling defensively, allowing just ten points in the last two games and giving up 14 or fewer in three of the last five. UMass won’t blow up on the BYU D – forget about running the ball – but it should be able to hang around against the balanced Cougar O.
The BYU backfield is a little iffy with the running backs are hurt, including Jamaal Williams dealing with a foot injury. It won’t matter, but even though BYU will roll without a problem, as always, UMass will keep this a wee bit closer than some might like.
