BYU (1-3) vs. Toledo (3-0) Game Preview
Date: Friday, September 30
Game Time: 10:15 pm
Venue: LaVell Edwards Stadium, Provo, UT
Why Toledo Will Win
The Rockets have been the almost perfect so far in three dominant wins over bad college football teams. And why?
The offense is ripping through everything in its path.
The Rockets have the nation’s most efficient passing game, a crushing ground attack, and all the parts seem to be working so far on a swarming defense that’s not letting anyone go on any type of long scoring drives.
How dominant have the Toledo lines been?
The O line has yet to allow a sack, while the running game is averaging well over five yards per pop. The D line allowed one lonely touchdown and has an absolutely ridiculous 31 tackles for loss in three games.
How do you stop Taysom Hill and a mediocre BYU ground game? You sit in the backfield and don’t let it get moving.
So what’s the problem?
Why BYU Will Win
Two things. 1) Toledo has face Arkansas State, Maine, and Fresno State. The Red Wolves and Bulldogs have been epic fails throughout this season. 2) As amazing as the defense has been, and for all the big plays behind the line, and for all the swarming, and with such a great pass rush, how many takeaways has it come up with?
The Rocket have only turned the ball over four times, but that’s been just enough to keep the first few games from getting completely out of hand.
This is desperation time for BYU, and in only its second game at home, it has to be laser-focused and razor-sharp – and it has to win that turnover battle.
The offense finally started to work against Western Michigan, but the passing game still hasn’t been anything for Toledo to get into a twist over and Hill has yet to really go off – at least through the air.
Hill ran for 101 yards against the Mountaineers, and 90 against Utah, but the offense as a whole needs to play a complete game.
It won’t, but …
What’s Going To Happen?
It’s going to matter being in Provo, and it’s really going to matter that Toledo has to finally play a team that’s not awful.
BYU’s unable to play an uninteresting game, with all four so far decided by three points or fewer and a grand total of nine points. This one won’t be any different.
But the Toledo lines will be better.
It’ll be a wee bit of a stunner, but the Rockets will prove they’re the real deal.
