BYU (4-3) vs. Boise State (6-0) Game Preview
Date: Thursday, Oct. 20
Game Time: 10:15 pm
Venue: Albertons Stadium, Boise, ID
Here you go, Boise State. This is it. This is about as close to a playoff game in a regular season as it gets considering the rest of the Mountain West isn’t hold up its end of the bargain.
Obviously, it’s an uphill climb and argument to get Boise State into the College Football Playoff argument, and forget about it, of course, if there’s a loss along the way. But even with a road trip at Wyoming a potential trap, a long trip to Hawaii followed up by a date with UNLV six days later, and a finale at Air Force … come on. Any team worthy of playoff discussion needs to blow through the rest of the slate – and a MW title game against San Diego State – without breathing hard.
But the Broncos have been weird. They struggled late against an awful Colorado State team, they haven’t been ripping teams up as easily as they should be, and they’re making way too many mistakes.
But they’re 6-0, and now they need to blow up against a BYU team that survived the nation’s most brutal schedule as well as humanly possible, and now can make a big, giant statement.
BYU is going to the Poinsettia Bowl if and when it wins two more games – whatever. There’s no playoff hope, there’s no conference championship, and there’s nothing left after this but a whole slew of exhibition scrimmages against bad teams. So this is it.
This is the chance for the Cougars to ramp up fun offense and come up with something special as the spoiler before going into a must-deserved long break.
Boise State is better, has more on both sides of the ball, and it has the running game to crank it up and control the game, but it also can’t take the ball away.
BYU is a +6 this year in turnover margin – only being on the negative side in the loss to West Virginia. Meanwhile, Boise State has just three takeaways all season long. While the Broncos haven’t given the ball away in either of the last two games, the strong D isn’t creating its own breaks.
BYU will give Boise State all it can handle, but the Broncos will be able to dink and dunk the Cougar defense to death. Toledo was able to throw all day, and that’s exactly what Brett Rypien will do in an efficient game that’ll be just enough to hold off a thrilling late comeback from Taysom Hill and the Cougar O.
