Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List announced. What are the five things that matter for the 2016 Bronko Nagurski first look?


– The Football Writers Association of America announced the 2016 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List, looking at the top defensive players in college football.

– Last season, Temple LB Tyler Matakevich won. Arizona LB Scooby Wright won in 2014, Pitt DT Aaron Donald in 2013, Notre Dame LB Manti Te’o in 2012, and Boston College LB Luke Kuechly in 2011.

– Notable Bronko Nagurski winners: Warren Sapp DT Miami in 1994, Northwestern LB and now-head coach Pat Fitzgerald with back-to-back wins in 1995 and 1996, Michigan DB Charles Woodson in 1007, Georgia DB Champ Bailey in 1998, and Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh in 2009. The first Nagurski went to Arizona DT Rob Waldrop in 1993.

– The SEC leads the way this season with 27 players on the Watch List. The Big Ten and Pac-12 have 13, the ACC with 11, Big 12 10, and all the Group of 5 teams and independents with 14.
