Bowling Green (1-7) vs. Northern Illinois (2-6) Game Preview
Date: Tuesday, Nov. 1
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Huskie Stadium, DeKalb, IL
This was supposed to be the MAC Tuesday night showcase of giants, but instead it’s a showdown of stunning disappointments.
It’s a good thing overall for the conference that there are so many solid teams making statements, but it stinks that the two league powerhouses over the last two years are so miserable.
Bowling Green needed to do some reloading work, but it’s taking a long time to catch a break. The team has been competitive – three of the last four losses were each by a touchdown or less – and the offense is having its moments, but 1-7 with the lone win coming against North Dakota isn’t how this was all supposed to work. There was supposed to be a step back; not a total gut job.
Northern Illinois still has a shot at going bowling if it wins out. Finally, the team put it all together in a 44-7 win over a Buffalo team that just came up with a stunning blowout over Akron. Like Bowling Green, defense has been the biggest problem without enough key stops in big moments.
But as bad as the Huskies have been, they’re not giving the ball away like the Falcons are. Last in the nation in turnover margin, Bowling Green has turned it over three or more times six of the eight games and only won the turnover battle once.
Field position will matter, and the Falcons will keep the field tilted for stretches, but the NIU running game is starting to roll, with QB Anthony Maddie tearing off 111 yards or more in three of the last four games.
