Bowl and Conference Implications
If Boise State wins and Wyoming loses to New Mexico, the Broncos will go to the Mountain West Championship. Win that, and there’s a chance to get into the New Year’s Six, possibly the Cotton Bowl. Lose, and Wyoming wins the Mountain. Air Force will finish behind the Broncos and Cowboys no matter what, but it’s already bowl eligible.
What’s Going To Happen?
Can Boise State’s run defense slow down the Falcon running game? The D has been outstanding all season long, but it’ll likely be without star LB Tanner Vallejo against a ground game that’s hit the 450-yard mark in each of the last two weeks.
It took a little while to get the ocean in motion, but the Falcons have rolled over the second half of the season with 300 yards or more in four of the last five games as the team bounced back from a three-game losing streak to win four straight, with three of those games on the road.
The 1-2 combination of Jacobi Owens and Timothy McVey has been solid, but QB Arion Worthman has been the biggest difference, running for 523 yards and six scores in the last four games, and destroying San Jose State for 215 yards and two touchdowns.
But the most dangerous runner in the game is on the other side.
Jeremy McNichols has hit the 100-yard mark in every game but two, coming up with 206 yards and four scores last week against UNLV, coming up with 26 total touchdowns on the year. Last year, he hit Air Force for 151 yards and a score in the stunning loss to the Falcons, but now he needs to shine against a brick wall of a defense that’s allowed just 121 yards per game so far.
Can Boise State take care of its end of the Mountain Division bargain on the road? It’s been shaky at times on the road – particularly in the loss to Wyoming – but the offense has cranked it up over the last three weeks, finding its groove at the right time.
Air Force has a defense, though. San Jose State, Hawaii and UNLV don’t.
The Falcons will keep the score close, but the Boise State defense will come up with just enough stops, and the offense will hold on to the ball just enough, to get out alive.
