Big 12 Conference Week 2 Rankings, Predictions & Quick Takes

How are the Big 12 predictions so far? SU: 14-5, ATS: 6-6

1. Texas (2-0)

Final Score: Texas 41, UTEP 7
Prediction: Texas 47. UTEP 17, Texas -29.5
Up Next: at Cal

Quick Take: It might not have been as dominant and impressive a rushing performance without D’Onte Foreman in the lineup – the Longhorns averaged just 3.6 yards per carry and ran for 171 yards – but Shane Buechele was magnificent, completing 22-of-27 passes for 244 yards and four scores with 24 rushing yards. The defense gave up one big run, while the offense took care of the rest. Considering how emotional and physical the Notre Dame game was, there wasn’t any drama.

2. Oklahoma (1-1)

Final Score: Oklahoma 59, ULM 17
Prediction: Oklahoma 52, ULM 6, OU -46.5
Up Next: Ohio State

Quick Take: The offense needed to blow up just so it knows it could. Baker Mayfield did his part with three touchdown passes, and Austin Kendall added two scoring passes getting in some good work, but the defense got loose in the third quarter giving up two long touchdown passes. With Ohio State coming up next, the secondary is an issue after the first two weeks.

3. TCU (1-1)

Final Score: Arkansas 41, TCU 38, 2 OT
Prediction: TCU 38, Arkansas 30, TCU -7
Up Next: Iowa State

Quick Take: Kenny Hill was fantastic. One horrible penalty aside, he bombed away with great command of the offense, and he ran well with 93 yards and two scores to go along with the 377 passing yards and touchdown. But the defense couldn’t hold up its end of the bargain. Arkansas got more physical when it had to, and it came up with the clutch plays that TCU didn’t. There’s time to put together a special season, but it’s not going to happen until the D is better – especially with the Big 12 season coming up.

4. West Virginia (2-0)

Final Score: West Virginia 38, Youngstown State 21
Prediction: West Virginia 34, Youngstown State 17
Up Next: BYU

Quick Take: Skyler Howard came up with a gem overcoming a pick with five touchdown passes on a 389-yard day with 50 rushing yards. He spread the wealth around and the offense picked it up, but it took a while to get there. Youngstown State is a solid team and it wasn’t going to make this easy, but it took a big third quarter to pull away. Don’t read too much into the score against an FCS team – the O rolled.

5. Baylor (2-0)

Final Score: Baylor 40, SMU 13
Prediction: Baylor 52, SMU 13, Baylor -31
Up Next: at Rice

Quick Take: Here’s the big problem that was supposed to be fixed under Jim Grobe – the mistakes are still there. The Bears turned it over three times and committed 14 penalties, and they’re just not good enough now to overcome the problems like they did. It was fine to play like garbage for a half against SMU, but that’s not going to fly in the Big 12. Orion Stewart – with two interceptions and a pick six – and the D did its part, but the offense has yet to put it all together like it’s supposed to.

6. Kansas State (0-1)

Up Next: Florida Atlantic

7. Texas Tech (1-1)

Final Score:
Prediction: Arizona State 45, Texas Tech 38, ASU -3
Up Next: Louisiana Tech

Quick Take: Oh you Texas Tech defense, you do make things fun. Patrick Mahomes was brilliant, throwing for 540 yards and five scores with a rushing score – and he led the team with 44 yards on the ground – but the D got destroyed allowing 301 rushing yards with Kalen Ballage going off on scoring run after scoring run. All the Red Raiders had to do was hold serve at some point, and the D couldn’t do it.

8. Oklahoma State (1-1)

Final Score: Central Michigan 30, Oklahoma State 27
Prediction: Oklahoma State 44, Central Michigan 20, Oklahoma State -20.5
Up Next: Pitt

Quick Take: Everyone will bitch and moan that CMU shouldn’t have had a shot at the final miraculous play – and it shouldn’t have. However, blame Oklahoma State for letting it get that close in the first place. The running game was abysmal against a mediocre defensive front, and the O managed to convert just 1-of-11 third down chances.

9. Iowa State (0-2)

Final Score: Iowa 42, Iowa State 3
Prediction: Iowa 34, Iowa State 16, Iowa -15
Up Next: TCU

Quick Take: The Cyclones had to deal with a focused and effective Iowa team that dropped a hammer outside of allowing a first quarter field goal. Iowa State is supposed to grind it out with the running game, and it couldn’t do it with Mike Warren bottled up with just 28 yards, and the quarterbacks couldn’t move the offense a lick. It’s been a disastrous start, and now comes TCU. Uh oh.

10. Kansas (1-1)

Final Score: Ohio 37, Kansas 21
Prediction: Kansas 34, Ohio 31, Kansas -2.5
Up Next: at Memphis

Quick Take: 13:56. That’s how long Kansas held the ball for going 0-for-8 on third downs and missing both fourth down chances. The three turnovers hurt, but the biggest overall problem was the running game – there wasn’t one. The Jayhawks ran for 26 yards on 15 carries, while the defensive front got ripped up for 329 yards and two touchdowns.
