Baylor (3-0) vs. Oklahoma State (2-1) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, September 24th
Game Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: McLane Stadium, Waco, TX
Why Oklahoma State Will Win
Baylor has a bad habit of not showing up for games until after the first quarter, struggling out of the gate against SMU, and having big problems against Rice for a little while last week.
Granted, the Bears rolled to easy, blowout wins, but so would you if faced SMU and Rice.
Baylor has their three tune-up games to try getting everything in place for the Big 12 season, but this is a battle-tested Oklahoma State team that went through the drama of Central Michigan and the shootout fun against Pitt – this is going to be the tougher team for it.
Yeah, whoopee. Baylor is No. 1 in the nation in passing efficiency defense after facing absolutely no one. Now the Bear secondary is going to grad school dealing with Mason Rudolph, one of the nation’s best underexposed passers coming off a 540-yard day against Pitt and with over 1,000 yards with six touchdowns and a pick in his first three games.
Come out light against the Cowboys, and Baylor will be down 21-0 before they wake up.
Why Baylor Will Win
It’s not that Oklahoma State is awful at running the ball – it just doesn’t do it enough.
The Cowboys might have eight rushing scores, but they’ve got just 294 yards on the year and getting whipped up front by Central Michigan. It’ll continue to be stated with a caveat considering the competition, but Baylor has sat in opposing backfields over the first three weeks. It’s early, but the Oklahoma State offensive line has been a problem.
And yes, again, Baylor hasn’t played anyone, and yes, again, it’s taken a while to warm up. However, after missing so much time last year, QB Seth Russell has needed the time to get the offense going without Art Briles. He might not be as accurate as he’ll need to be in the Big 12 season, but he’s been putting up big numbers once he’s warmed up.
Now it’s time to unleash the Bear attack again, and it appears to be ready.
What’s Going To Happen?
Welcome to Mason Rudolph, America.
After his brilliant performance against Pitt, he’ll keep the production going by a team with a chip on its shoulder.
Rudolph will have another big game, and so will James Washington, who’s coming off a 296-yard, two score day as the main man for the attack.
Baylor will be fine as the game goes on, but Russell won’t be accurate enough on key downs.
It’ll be Rudolph’s day on the road.
